Gil Sheehan and David Gowdey:
Doing Kingdom Business in a Competitive World
"Human dignity is something we simply
cannot sacrifice to our bottom line."
Both David Gowdey and Gil Sheehan know that they've been called to the business world, though they've often wondered "What was God thinking!"
Almost 20 years ago, these two veterans of the dog-eat-dog promotional products industry formed Barrington Ltd to design and manufacture high-end business gifts and leather goods.
Though they describe themselves as highly competitive, from the get-go these men have been adamant about the fact they are doing God's work. They've committed Barrington to four values that embody Paul's workplace standards in Colossians 3 & 4:
- Create hand-crafted gifts of unparalleled quality
- Provide employees with growth opportunities
- Improve the communities in which Barrington operates
- Develop mutually beneficial, long-lasting relationships with clients
The need to remain competitive in today's economy led Gil and David to open their own manufacturing facility in Xiamen, China in 2003. Their commitment to honor Christ at work kept them from letting market pressure drive them to succumb to the abusive labor practices common in many parts of the Eastern Hemisphere. The Scripture reminds us frequently of God's concern for the poor, and part of Gil and David's commitment is to use their business to improve the lives of their employees, who would otherwise have few opportunities to earn a decent wage.
Barrington’s Xiamen facility is managed by Ben Briggs, a young entrepreneur from Dallas. Barrington employees receive fair wages and growth opportunities unparalleled by any other company in Asia. Gil and David say, "We are convinced that human dignity is something we simply cannot sacrifice to our bottom line." This commitment has born much fruit spiritually in the lives of Barrington's employees in China, as many of them have become part of God's family through faith in Christ.
Barrington’s commitment to the community has also led to the adoption of a local orphanage where employees serve special needs children who have been abandoned by their parents. Also Watch Shirley's story on You Tube.
